The world is facing challenges, yet a sense of hope remains. A fresh honor originating at the interdisciplinary festival the Starmus festival aims to encourage people to make a difference.

The medal is to be awarded in memory of the esteemed British primatologist who passed away recently. It will recognise individuals and groups that champion our planet's biodiversity.

The Medal's Framework

Initial honorees are slated for announcement at the upcoming Starmus event in Tenerife and La Palma, which will run from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

According to statements that Goodall, who was a Starmus advisory board member, had backed the award’s creation. “The vision behind this award, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, originated with Jane,” a representative said. “She expressed she would like for this to occur. This is likely because of the close relationship she had with the festival.”

“This medal will acknowledge enduring projects undertaken to create a planet improved for people, animals and the environment and foster motivation to carry on that work,” commented a relative.

Format and Inspiration

A co-founder of the festival stated that the medal – which was announced at a scientific institution – would probably encompass various fields.

“It will be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking award for science communication established exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Goodall was an honoree of that very medal.

Expressing concern about the future for Earth, a prominent voice remarked, “Honestly, it is difficult to feel hopeful. Present governance globally represents a war on science. So this undermines collective action.”

“We realised that truth is becoming contested when politics are involved. And it’s a very dangerous thing,” it was said. “The climate science is a science; you cannot have any influence by political agendas in climate science.”

The goal remains that this honor will inspire action. “It’s about inspiring individuals to engage and to show concern and to work in that direction, truly.
